If you are really my children, you will fear nothing, stop at nothing. You will be like lions. You must rouse India and the whole world.Swami Vivekananda

With the constant criticism and attempts at tarnishing Swami Vivekananda’s image by the Christian missionaries in India, he requested his friends and associates not to fear rather learn to stand up, on their own feet. Swami Vivekananda was filling the young blood of individuals all over the world and India with new inspiration for freedom, spiritualism and individual growth based on spiritual education balanced with science. It is evident from his works and literature that he never believed in blind faith, parroting religious scriptures and participating in some elocution for personal glorification.

He was inspired to blend Vedic knowledge along with modern science in a hope to bring a learning which can narrow the gap between the orient and the occident. This would also prove to be a perfect platform for modern science to continue the research using Vedantic cosmology and also delve upon the cosmogony mentioned in these scriptures. The five elements in Vedic terms are Prithvi (Earth), Agni (Fire), Akasha (Ether/matter), Jal (Water), Vayu (Wind). The Upanishads state that the cosmos is made up of these five elements which in Sanskrit are called as Pancha (five) Bhutas (beings) and it is Prana (Energy) which has condensed into these five beings. The other translation for the word Bhutas most commonly used is - elements.

Further, these scriptures also state that these five elements play a great role in the formation of the human body, including the Prana. Prana is a cosmic force which breathes as life in every human, plant, animal, rock, mountain, river and just about every minute particle in the whole of cosmos. Yoga focuses on connecting our inner selves to gain control over this cosmic prana to attain immortality. Paramahansa Yogananda coined an English equivalent to Prana as Lifetrons. Scientists are still researching on Lifetrons today.

Swami Vivekananda being well-versed in Vedas and Upanishads was very keen to meet Mr. Nikola Tesla and discuss on the relation between energy and matter. I am presenting some facts based on an article written by Mr. Toby Grotz who himself presented certain facts from the book, Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Vol.5.

Swami Vivekananda used a translation for Prana as force. There can be many interpretations for every word in Sanskrit. What may be used as one term may never necessarily apply for another. The meanings are very deep and each word could bring out multiple words in English as an equal translation and yet they may never get close. Sanskrit is indeed a beautiful language and the more you learn, the deeper you seem to go into it. Each word can break up into two new words and you could learn some new meanings out of them again. For e.g. Vishnu the creator is pretty scientific if we look deep into it. Vishwa means cosmos and Anu means atom. Vishwa + Anu = The One who resides in every atom of the cosmos is Vishnu.  (I am no expert in this language. Whenever I want to know, I ask my father and he 'enlightens' me.)

Swami Vivekananda met Nikola Tesla at a meeting arranged on the day of a French play, Bhudda which was enacted by Sarah Bernhardt. It was Sarah who arranged the meeting and that is when Swami Vivekananda explained about Akasha and Prana to Tesla and according to the Swami’s letter, ‘Mr. Tesla was charmed to hear about the Vedantic Prana and Akasha and the Kalpas, which according to him are the only theories modern science can entertain.....Mr Tesla thinks he can demonstrate that mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy. I am to go see him next week to get this mathematical demonstration.’ Swami Vivekananda simply wanted to prove using Vedantic Cosmology that matter was nothing but energy.

Mr. Toby very beautifully explains how Nikola Tesla could understand the Sanskrit terms and comprehend exactly what Swami Vivekananda was trying to explain in spite of the fact that Tesla didn’t know Sanskrit at all. Tesla did try his very best to arrive at a theory to prove that matter and energy are related, but failed to do so. It was only ten years after Swami Vivekananda’s passing Albert Einstein was finally destined to prove it through his famous theory of relativity. The Upanishads and Vedas as Swami Vivekananda had said were revelations from the Rishis, they contain knowledge on everything including the anti-matter which is currently under research at the CERN, Switzerland. Basically, the seven Rishis are revered as the ancestors of human civilization as per Hindu faith. They in Sanskrit are called as the Saptarishis (Sapta – seven).

The Saptarishis are known to be eternal beings who, are present in the cosmos and are in constant trance. Their plane of existence may be known only through meditation. It is very difficult to fathom the concept of Saptarishis. According to some, the theory of Saptarishis is nothing but astrological conjuctions of various stars and constellations. Thus to store this knowledge the Rishis gave each star of the Great Bear a name and thus it was known as the Saptarishi Constellation and stored the information in the form of mythological stories. The Saptarishis could have existed once upon a time and later their descendants could have written them down using their names as codes so that information doesn't get misused by those who had selfish motives.

The Vedic knowledge was often mixed with occult science - which was a method to discover knowledge on different aspects of the cosmos by developing soul intuition. If such secrets of occult science ever happened to fall into wrong hands, the powers developed out of them could be misused for selfish gains. This was a reason why many mystics of those days used to always speak of their spiritual experiences of trance states in code words. Paramahansa Yogananda explains his experience of having communicated with some of the rishis in his meditation in his autobiography. They, according to the Vedas and other Hindu scriptures have known to exist beyond many world cycles and even many cosmic evolutionary processes and dissolutions.

The Ramayana is considered to be a story which is more than 100,000 years old. One of the Saptarishi, Vashishta, who was Rama’s Guru, tells Rama during his learning days that many world cycles have come and passed. He also says that there are times when there is no life on earth at all and it is completely dry. There is also a time when there is no cosmos and only void exists. According to this scripture called Yoga Vashishta which has a total of 32,000 Shlokas (Sanskrit qantets), the Saptarishis have existed through many dimensions of time and space, and many cosmic dissolutions and formations.

Vashishta says this to Rama because he wants to know how creation came into being. Vashishta clearly quotes the Vedas (this is 100,000 years back) that everything is Brahman. Everything comes from the void, and goes back into it. He also clearly says that it is our consciousness which is dreaming this life because we have created new desires. The Brahman is in us, and that is our supreme consciousness. Every time we create an attachment or desire, we create a new world in the future with the power of our thought. Our consciousness gets entangled in this egoistic desire and is soon progressing towards that new world of creation for the fulfilment of that desire.

The names of the seven Rishis are – Gauthama, Vashishtha, Artreya, Bhrigu, Kashyapa Kuthsa and Angirasa. It is not necessary that the Upanishads and Vedas originated from them alone. There were many other Rishis like Vishwamitra, Agastya, Koundinya etc. who contributed to the vast oceanic knowledge of the Vedas. India was once upon a time the land of the Rishis who expounded on every kind of science related with anatomy, physiology, astronomy, astrology, medicine. They even had advanced knowledge in music, theatre arts and dance forms. Such was the heritage of India where a Rishi whose name was Nara was born as Narendranath Dutta who later renounced world and adopted the monastic name of Swami Vivekananda.

Very nice article DM. I have always supposed that everything is connected at the molecular level. However, how that tends to be connected with human thought is still beyond my comprehension at this time, other than they are both derived from these same molecules. Maybe someday.

Thank you sir. :-) Indeed we are all connected at some thought level from which this creation sprung forth and science has come to a point to accept that we create what we think.
