God Would Be Mean If He, Held Anarchy Over The Power Of Love

In this universe it is love that binds everything together. Love is the very foundation, beauty and fulfillment of life.– Mata Amritanandamayi
I happen to read a few articles here and there on SearchWarp and get inspired from any random theme to produce my own thoughts, opinions and experiences from real life. Thanks to Fran again for bringing the topic on love. I have been wanted to write something on the magnitude and power of love but was never able to hit the right note or probably, in a philosophical or Vedantic way, I would say – the universe hadn’t opened the doors until now.
Narada replied, “Okay, do me one favour. Go and ask each and every member of your family, if they would be willing to share your sins?" Ratnakar immediately headed back home to have a discussion on this matter with his family. The moment he questioned them, none would say a word. They all agreed to share the fruits of his sins, but not his sinful acts. This surprised him a lot and he rushed back to Narada and told him that he was shocked to know that his family wouldn’t stand on his side when it came to committing an act of robbery or killing.
He realized that Narada was not any ordinary human, rather an enlightened Rishi who had already attained the knowledge of the self. He pleaded him for forgiveness by bowing at his feet. Narada requested him to get up and initiated him into a mantra and said, “I want you to sit and meditate on these words – Mara–Mara". Ratnakar followed suit immediately and he found a serene place in the forest and started meditating for years together and as he continued in his mind to chant on “Mara-Mara", they transformed into “Rama- Rama- Rama" – a divine incarnate king who was to be born soon.
As years passed, Ratnakar was in deep trance and Narada visited him again and found him buried inside an anthill. He was so still in his meditation that even ants built a home over his body. That day Narada requested him to move out of his trance and named him Valmiki. Valmika means anthill and so he was named as Valmiki. Narada then requested Valmiki Rishi to compose the epic Ramayana. I shared this ancient tale as an example that God doesn’t give power to one single messiah or saint and order that only they shall hold the authority to religion and the path to God. The path is immortal and it lies within each one of us. God should have pushed Ratnakar into hell for punishment, but why didn’t he? Instead, he was shown love and compassion for reformation and love certainly did a great miracle.
The power of love is such that even carnivores can become friends. I have read about this in two different books. One was 'Living with the Himalayan Masters' - by Swami Rama. He used to trek in the mountains to meet yogis and once he was late in the evening and it was almost dark and decided to rest inside a cave. As soon as he lied down, to his surprise he found lion cubs jumping over his body and playing with him. The cubs thought it was their mother. But soon he realized he was in the wrong place and must get out before the mother arrives and as soon as he got up to leave, the lioness was standing at the mouth of the cave. Swami Rama was a little bit worried that she might attack him, but she did nothing and silently moved to the side as a gesture of allowing him space to walk out.
Another story is from Aghora – 1 & 2 on Swami Vimalananda who spent a long time in Gir Forest, Gujarat, where Lions are famous. One of the lions befriended him and used to spend all day beside him. When it was time for Vimalananda to leave for the city, it won't let him go and just follow him all the way till he had to find a way to send it back. Even a monkey had learned to communicate with him during this period. For days together the Swami was running on fever and the monkey tried to distract his attention but he would just angrily shoo him away. The next morning the monkey returned with crushed leaves in its hands and stuffed them into Swami Vimalananda’s mouth. He knew that the monkey meant something good and he chewed the leaves and swallowed them. He was feeling better within a few hours. That is the power of love.

Mata Amritanandamayi Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Love can attract anybody and everybody. The greatest examples of love I still can recall are two great saints - Mata Amritanandamayi and Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The most beautiful thing about love is that you don’t feel it controlling you. You don’t feel bound by anything - it is more like a feeling of liberation. My experiences with both Amma (Amritanandamayi) and Sai Baba have been similar. The first two times I visited Amma, she gave me a hug and whispered in my ear (sweet child). Every time I experienced her hug, I never felt her body against mine. There was no feeling of flesh to flesh, rather I felt I was melting as spirit and just merging as one consciousness.
She requested me to sit behind her on the stage for a while. The moment I sat down and started to meditate, I sensed an oceanic wave of love and bliss entering my being. I was fully encompassed with her energy of love. My body started to feel lighter, and there was a moment as if no pain, sorrow or suffering would disturb me ever. That was an instantaneous example she gave me. I learned that very moment the ‘perfect’ and ‘highest’ state of love. There have been moments when she visited Chennai and I wouldn’t want to go and see her that day. As I would continue to resist, the magnetism of her intuitive call would increase so much that it would give me the energy to walk for more than 6 km just to go and visit her.The magnetism of her aura could be sensed at least around 1 km of radius of her presence.
I would even talk about Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi in a similar fashion. I was a hardcore sceptic for twenty years which all disappeared the moment I got down at the Sri Sathya Sai Prashanti Nilayam railway station. There was a sudden air of peace, calm, serenity and love. There was an air of purity which I never sensed in any other city or town or village. This was my first visit to see him and the moment I reached the gates of the ashram, the magnetism grew stronger. I hadn’t even seen him yet, and still I felt a thousand and one magnets working on me. Everything I saw, or felt or wherever I walked, my heart was only talking of his love. I could see only one feeling imprinted on every wall of this ashram and that was love.
I sat in the hall for his Darshan (homage to holy saints), and he appeared sitting on a golf car. The moment the car stopped in front of the row I was present, he stared straight into my eyes. I got a straightforward feeling as if he knew my thoughts and also knew that I had come for the first time. Soon after the car moved on and I was out, I saw my mind not able to focus on any worldly thoughts anymore. Every impurity of the mind got flushed out and my consciousness was feeling nothing but bliss and God. I was feeling pure from the heart, filled with his love and compassion.
Even to this day, every time I visit him and come back, the effect of having seen him or been in his presence is immense – I don’t feel a negative feeling entering me, I feel calm and peaceful, no agitation and there is a state of permanent stillness that emanates right from the core centre of my being which is coming out somewhere much deeper than the heart. These are the saints who teach us to be like them, and set an example of love and forgiveness. They let us know that even we can be like them. God, messiah or prophet – they are not an anarchy, rather living examples of how mankind should be. They come to live for us to demonstrate that we can be messiahs too, we can be prophets like them. Jiddu Krishnamurti always condemned the supremacy of religion and said – “You are the Guru."
Religion is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man. – Swami Vivekananda
