Get Ready For the Biggest Full Moon in 19 Years

All of us will be witnessing one of the rarest events next weekend, when the moon approaches its closest point to Earth. This is going to be the biggest full moon in about 19 years.

The 19th of March will be an unusual huge full moon day as the moon will be progressing during its 28-day cycle towards a point called as ‘lunar perigee’.

The last time the moon ever passed its closest point to the Earth was in 1992. This is going to be for moon lovers a spectacular view as it would appear to be 14% bigger than its original size. The brightness is expected to increase by at least 30%. We can only hope for clear skies to witness this rare phenomenon.

On a serious note, scientists are worried that this ‘lunar perigee’ of the moon could cause great extremities in weather conditions and also natural catastrophes like tsunami, earthquake or volcanic eruptions.

Indonesia witnessed an earthquake in 2005 which was measured as 9.0 on the Richter scale and that was the year the moon passed unusually closer to the earth and the same year we witnessed Hurricane Katrina.

While other sceptics have overlooked the possibility of weather extremity, there has been evidence for such occurrences in the years 1955, 1974 and 1992.

Yahoo! News spoke to Dr. Tim O’Brien who said, “The dangers are really overplayed. You do get a bit higher than average tides than usual along coastlines as a result of the moon's gravitational pull, but nothing so significant that will cause a serious climatic disaster or anything for people to worry about.”

Dr. Victor Gostin is a Planetary and Environmental Geoscientist at Adelaide University and his views differ a bit from Dr. O’Brien who speculated that places around the equator experiencing earthquakes with much intensity might have to do something with new moon and full moon situations. He confirmed his statement by stating Earth-tides maybe one of the triggering causes for the earthquake.

We might also experience extreme high tide and low tide situations during this time, sources said.
