Anna Hazare

Social worker Anna Hazare has vowed to fast unto death at the historic monument, Jantar Mantar in New Delhi till the Congress government accepts his demand to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen’s Ombudsman Bill). Ever since the ousted telecom minister A. Raja was arrested for irregularities in the 2G spectrum after issuing illegal licenses for a huge sum of money, the Congress party decided to form GoM – Group of Ministers to form an anti-corruption bill to tackle corruption.

Mr. Kapil Sibal replaced A. Raja soon after the scandal and found no irregularities in the scam and also claimed there was no loss of revenue to the government which was estimated at around Rupees l lakh 80,000 Crores. The same gentleman Mr. Kapil Sibal who gave Mr. Raja a clean chit is sitting on the panel of G o M. The Group of Ministers are drafting the anti-corruption bill to strengthen laws against corruption and the common man is not happy with it as he only sees it as another act by ministers to get away with corruption.

Mr. Sharad Pawar, the Agriculture Minister was also a part of the group and owns huge pieces of land which are considered illegal. I guess his conscience forced him to quit as soon as Anna started his movement.

Magsaysay Awardee Anna Hazare is demanding from the government that they should include 5 members from the Civil Society and 5 members from the Ministry to discuss it over. He first wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and expected a reply by 4th of April. The P.M. refused to reply. Anna Hazare had laid conditions that he would go on indefinite fast till the government accepts his demands. Mr. Hazare mentioned in his letter to the P.M. that the people sitting on the bench themselves deserve to be in prison.

The government says they are ready for dialogue and willing to accept suggestions. But Anna Hazare’s demands are that they should accept the draft formed by the Civil Society as it is, without bringing any changes or modifications to it. The first woman IPS officer, Kiran Bedi has called upon the youth of the nation to support his cause and fight against corruption saying that we have been betrayed time and again by the politicians. Had these goons not swindled the savings of the common man and stashed them into Swiss Bank accounts, India would have become the second largest economy of the world, according to the former IPS Officer.

The movement started by the great social worker who is 72 years old, has caught on with the nation. All students, families, senior citizens are slowly joining this movement. Even school students as young as 13 year olds are vowing support the cause of Anna Hazare. A grandfather leant his support with his two grandsons and the reason he gave was that he wanted his children to know the reasons why this revolution against corruption has taken birth and they must witness that history is going to be written soon.

Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan has lent his support to the movement by writing a letter to the Prime Minister and slowly there are many other social activists joining in. My only hope is that the revolution spreads across the country and what the world witnessed at Tahrir could very well be seen at Jantar Mantar.

This is the second day of the fast and there is more to come. People soon plan to block all government offices if they don’t receive any answer from the Parliament. This bill is not just about fighting corruption, but it is also about de-criminalization of politics. A supporter said, "It is better for us to live in jail instead of a nation ridden with corruption."

At least 120,000 people have supported the cause online right now. People from all over the world are slowly tweeting and posting and gathering in groups. I support this cause, do you? Let us all fight against corruption and support Mr. Anna Hazare, at least by spreading the message around.
